Course Description
 More Details

1. A perennial issue for many writers is what to say next, especially in informative and argumentative writing. Instead of adding something meaningful for elaboration purposes, students will sometimes write "fluff," attempting to meet a length requirement, resulting in unneeded or repetitive information. Other students may simply stop at the elaboration step, adding nothing. So how do we equip writers to tell more?

Participants will explore numerous ideas for elaboration--adapted for high-school writers --from Jennifer Serravallo's The Writing Strategies Book and Rozlyn Linder's The Big Book of Details as well as a strategy from Martin Brandt's Between the Commas ("Anticipating Reader's Expectations").

In addition, best practices will be discussed, including leveraging ELA lessons (like sentence patterns and punctuation), scaffolding toward success, and more.

2. Participants may benefit from Jennifer Serravallo's The Writing Strategies Book and Rozlyn Linder's The Big Book of Details, though the target audience for both books is high-school students.
